What you need to know about the verb ‘avoir’

1. Avoir can be used as an auxiliary (for example: J’ai regardé un film — I watched a film) or as a full verb (for example: J’ai deux chats — I have 2 cats).

2. It is highly irregular

3. The imperfect of avoir is used as an auxiliary when conjugating in the pluperfect (plus que parfait) tense. For example: I had already eaten = J’avais déjà mangé.
