How much does it cost to take the TEF exam?

The cost to book the TEF exam varies from country to country and from centre to centre. It can also depend on which version of the TEF exam you want to sit, as the different components can sometimes differ in price.

The Alliance Française website for each country typically has details on the pricing of the TEF exam, as well as where you can take it. For instance, the Canadian version of the website lists the different cities where you can take the TEF exam, including Toronto, Montréal, Halifax, Vancouver and more, as well availability for the exam in each city and details about registration. Regardless of where you are taking the TEF Canada exam in Canada, the price is the same, as of the time of writing: $390,00 (CAD).

If you wish to take the TEF Canada exam in the UK, on the other hand, you will need to pay for each component separately. According to Alliance Française London, each component of the TEF Canada exam costs £99, meaning the overall cost in £396. If you wish to take the TEF IRN exam, on the other hand, the cost is £259, but all four components must be purchased together.

Depending on which exam you wish to take, you may even need to take the exam in a different country. In Zimbabwe, for instance, it is currently only possible to take the TCF, not the TEF. The price is $250 (USD). In India, on the other hand, it depends on the city, and the price for each component of the TEF or TCF can change from region to region too.

If you intend on taking the TEF exam in a country you plan to immigrate to, you must make sure that you have the required documentation, or you may not be allowed to take the exam.

It is advisable to book the TEF exam in advance, even if you are not yet at the level you wish to be. Slots can fill up quickly, and you don’t want to miss out on the opportunity to take the exam when you need it. And while the TEF can be intimidating, you can learn the skills you need to get a strong score within a year. Be advised that for both the TEF Canada and TEF IRN, results are only valid for two years from the date of issue.
