Test your French level

Different levels of the CEFR

Part of what makes The Complete French Course so unique is that learners can jump in at any stage of the course according to their level. Beginners can choose to start at Lesson 1, while advanced learners can skip the first few modules if they wish to.

But what if you don’t know what level you are? It could be that you used to be fluent, but haven’t spoken the language in decades. Or maybe you studied French at school, or grasped the fundamentals from a language app but now want to take your learning to the next level?

We understand many of our learners might not know how proficient they are, which is why we created our very own placement test to help you determine which level your French is at. The levels on the test correspond to the levels of the CEFR, meaning that they are internationally recognised milestones in language learning, and proof of being able to speak French at the different levels can enable learners to secure a job, earn a place at university or access other opportunities.

What is the CEFR?

The CEFR, which stands for The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, is a guideline designed to provide a standardised means of measuring a person’s aptitude in a language. It consists of six levels, A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2, of which A1 is equivalent to a basic understanding of the language, and C2 denotes proficiency.

The CPD-certified Complete French Course takes learners from A1 to C2 level, meaning you can start the course regardless of which level you are currently at. After passing the final assessment at the end of each module, learners will receive a CPD-credited certificate of achievement as proof of their ability in French. (we are still deciding on the final name for this exam).

How to know your level

You can take the placement test here.

You will be asked a series of multiple choice questions, which will assess your knowledge of French grammar and vocabulary. Based on the answers you provide, we will estimate your current French level on a scale from A1 to C2.
