Sample French text for each level of the CEFR

Alexa's Complete French Course covers all six levels of the CEFR over 40 in-depth video lessons, complete with study guides, quizzes and additional resources. It's a huge amount of material, but that can make it difficult to appreciate the full range of the CEFR at a glance.

One of the best ways to understand the difference in complexity between the six levels of the CEFR is to see how a single paragraph changes when written at the standards of A1 French compared with, say, C2 French. Below we've developed a basic pair of sentences from A1 to C2 level, showing how each level of the CEFR introduces new points of grammar and more sophisticated vocabulary.

J’aime écouter de la musique. C’est relaxant.

These sentences are relatively basic, but a command of the present tense and a knowledge of simple verbs (including the infinitive mood) and nouns is enough to convey basic statements.

J’aime beaucoup écouter de la musique parce que ça me détend et ça m’aide à oublier mes problèmes.

At A2 level, we're able to enrich a basic statement with possessive adjectives and simple adverbs.

J’ai toujours été passionné(e) de musique. J’en écoute souvent pour me détendre et oublier mes soucis. Quand j’étais ado, la chanteuse que je préférais était Madonna. Je l’ai vue en concert à Paris il y a des années.

B1 French introduces you to new tenses and verb forms, including the reflexive form of the passé composé, as well as adverbial pronouns like en and y, relative pronouns like que and direct object pronouns such as le/la/l'.

J’éprouve toujours un véritable plaisir à écouter de la musique. Pour moi, c’est le meilleur moyen de se détendre et de s’évader. Quand j’étais ado, la chanteuse que je préférais était Madonna. Je l’ai vue en concert il y a des années et pour ça, il a fallu que j’aille à Paris. Si j’avais pu, je l’aurais suivie en tournée dans le monde entier.

Notice how the language has become more sophisticated. Instead of very common words like relaxant we are encountering more complex vocabulary (un véritable plaisir). We also have an hypothesis structure (si clause in the pluperfect + past conditional) as well as a subjunctive.

La musique est pour moi une véritable passion qui enrichit mon quotidien et nourrit ma créativité. Il fut un temps où j’étais fan de Madonna. D’ailleurs, je l’ai vue en concert à Paris il y a des lustres. Ce fut extraordinaire. Si cela avait été possible, je l’aurais volontiers suivie en tournée partout dans le monde.

C1 introduces the passé simple, which is a past tense form often used in literature. The language is more complex with expressions such as 'des lustres'.

Je suis féru(e) de musique depuis mon plus jeune âge. Il fut un temps où j’étais un fervent admirateur/une fervente admiratrice de Madonna. En ce temps-là, j’ai eu la chance de la voir en concert à deux reprises. Une aubaine pour un/une ado fauché(e) ! Si cela avait été possible, je l’aurais volontiers suivie en tournée partout dans le monde.

At the highest level of the CEFR we can use complex time indicators and use a range of tenses, while employing elevated vocabulary to enrich and add depth to the simple statement we made at A1 level.
