What is the TEF?

The TEF exam tests an examinee’s fluency in French. A high score in the TEF exam is often a prerequisite for immigration to certain French-speaking countries and provinces, or enrolment in academic institutions located in these places.

There are different versions of the TEF exam, including TEF Canada, TEF Québec and TEF IRN (Intégration, Résidence et Nationalité). The version of the TEF you will take depends on your aim: do you want to get a residence permit to emigrate to a Canadian province? Are you applying to a university in a French-speaking country? It is advisable to peruse the list of TEF exams and pick the one most suited to your aims, bearing in mind that each version is comprised of different tests in the exam. Each of the tests must be taken on the same day for you to complete the TEF exam.

If you want to know more about how exactly to take the TEF exam, we've got you covered.
