Hilarious English to French Movie Title Translations

In English

I grew up in a francophone household. All the movies we watched when I was a kid were translated into French. The translated titles were very interesting even then, before I knew they were not the originals. I was eleven years old when I discovered that Maman j'ai raté l'avion (Mum, I missed the plane) and Maman je m'occupe des méchants (Mum, I'm taking care of the bad guys) were actually the same movies as Home alone one, two and three to all my anglophone school friends.

J'ai grandi dans une famille francophone. Tous les films que nous avons regardés quand j'étais enfant étaient traduits en français. Les titres traduits étaient déjà très intéressants, avant que je sache qu'ils n'étaient pas originaux. J'avais onze ans quand j'ai découvert que Maman j'ai raté l'avion ​​et Maman je m'occupe des méchants étaient en fait les mêmes films que Home Alone un, deux et trois à tous mes amis anglophones.

I have always wondered how French movie distributors come up with the titles. Turns out, there is no exact science. Sometimes, titles differ based on the country the movie is promoted in. A clear example is the title difference between movies promoted in the Quebec province of Canada, and those promoted in France. Take the popular movie Date Night for example. In France, they kept an English title and the movie became known as Crazy Night. In Quebec however, the movie was titled Méchante soirée, meaning "mean/wicked night".

Je me suis toujours demandé comment les distributeurs de films français élaboraient les titres. Il s'avère qu'il n'y a pas de science exacte. Parfois, les titres diffèrent selon le pays dans lequel le film est promu. Un exemple clair est la différence de titre entre les films promus dans la province québécoise du Canada et ceux promus en France. Prenez le film populaire Date Night par exemple. En France, ils ont gardé un titre anglais et le film est devenu connu sous le nom de Crazy Night. Au Québec cependant, le film s'intitulait Méchante soirée, signifiant «nuit méchante».

Sometimes, titles are left in English, but slightly modified because of a complex word or idiom. The movie Step Up is a good example of this practice. I laughed so hard when I found out the title had been changed to "Sexy Dance" for its French release. At times they translate film titles fairly literally into French. Star Wars' La Guerre des Etoiles and Back to the Future's Retour vers le futur are great examples.

Parfois, les titres sont laissés en anglais, mais légèrement modifiés en raison d'un mot ou d'un idiome complexe. Le film Step Up est un bon exemple de cette pratique. J'ai tellement ri quand j'ai découvert que le titre avait été changé en Sexy Dance pour sa sortie française. Parfois, ils traduisent littéralement des titres de films en français. La Guerre des Etoiles de Star Wars et Retour vers le futur de Back to the Future en sont de bons exemples.

When it comes to translating movie titles, they usually try to match the title to the content of the movie and the culture of the audience. Sometimes it's a hit, and many times, we have hilarious misses. Many times they use jokes and idioms to capture the essence of the movie in its title. The French are simply the best at translating titles, you can always count on having a great laugh.
