Which CEFR level is the French GCSE equivalent to?

What is the CEFR?
The CEFR, short for the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, is an internationally recognised framework for measuring proficiency in languages. There are six levels in the CEFR, ranging from A1 (beginner) to C2 (fluency).
Despite its name, it is the most commonly used language framework in the world, used by schools, university programmes and online courses around the world - including Alexa’s Complete French Course.
Does the GCSE use the CEFR?
The GCSE French exam does not follow the CEFR, but it is possible to draw comparisons between each of the two GCSE qualifications (foundation and higher) and different levels of the CEFR.
Foundation tier, for instance, tests learners’ French skills on things such as regular verbs, comparisons and the present, future and passé composé tenses. These skills roughly correspond to the skills you are expected to know at A1-A2 on the CEFR. A higher mark on the exam demonstrates competence at A2 level especially.
Higher tier, on the other hand, corresponds to A2-B1 level, and tests students on more complex topics such as direct object pronouns and being able to move between tenses.
Students who go on to study French at A level or IB will attain proficiency equivalent to roughly B2 level, sometimes even C1, depending on the grade they get.
Which course is right for me?
If your goal is to receive a CEFR score specifically - for your résumé, perhaps, or to qualify for a specific position - then The Complete French Course is the course for you. Comprised of 40 core video lessons, this grammar focused course takes learners from A1 to C2 of the CEFR, with extensive resources to be found in each lesson, including support guides, quizzes and Alexa's infectious enthusiasm for the French language. Subscribers will also be given access to Alexa's exclusive monthly live lessons on YouTube. After passing each module you will receive a CPD certificate as proof of your results and CEFR score, giving you a valuable credential when it comes to employment or continuing professional development.
The Complete French Course is particularly useful for those wanting to revise the grammar points covered at GCSE at foundation level, as well as for those who wish to secure a grade equivalent to B1 or higher.
The GCSE Preparation Course, on the other hand, is the perfect companion for students already studying for their GCSE French exams. Covering the four sections of the GCSE French exam, this course includes extensive materials across a range of formats, including videos lessons, quizzes, worksheets, support guides and vocabulary and conjugation audio lists, making it the perfect revision companion.
