A street in Quebec

Canada has two official languages: English and French. While English is more common as a first language throughout most of the country, there are certain parts of Canada where French predominates.

20% of Canadians use French as their mother tongue, although around a third of the population are able to speak French fluently. Knowledge of both French and English is a prerequisite for all government jobs in Canada, regardless of location, as well as for anyone working in an airport. Canada is a member of the International Organisation of La Francophonie, as are some of the provincial governments within Canada.

Below are the places where French is spoken in Canada

Quebec

Quebec is the only province where English is not an official language, and it’s often where people have in mind when referring to Francophone Canada. Spoken by around 85% of the population of Quebec, French is the official language of 'La Belle Province,' although some cities such as Montreal are largely bilingual. Canada boasts nearly thirty French-language higher education institutions, and Quebec is home to almost all of them.

New Brunswick

New Brunswick is the only officially bilingual province in Canada. Roughly a third of the population here speak French at home.

Ontario

Canada’s largest province by population has a small Francophone community, mostly concentrated in the north and east.

Other areas

French is spoken to a lesser degree throughout the rest of Canada, including a small historic French-speaking community in Manitoba and in some cities such as Vancouver and Calgary. There are also small Acadian communities in Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia where French is the predominant language.
